Colostrum is crucial.  It is a deep lemon-colored antibody-rich fluid produced from the mother's mammary glands during the first few days after birth.

It is rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates and lipids as well as minerals, protein, vitamin A, magnesium, copper and zinc.  It also contains important growth hormones such as immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) and compounds like lactoferrin for new offspring who can absorbs these antibodies whole and provides immunity and protection from certain infections for several weeks and limits inflammation.  Colostrum is crucial.

The time right after a puppy is born is crucial.  During their first two weeks of life, puppies face risks to their health because of their weak immune system and developing energy storage. According to this 2021 study, "The post-natal period is very sensitive in dogs and cats, as in other animal species. During the first two weeks of life, puppies and kittens are at high risk of dehydration, hypothermia, and hypoglycemia, as well as infectious diseases as they start to acquire the physiological functions of the adult. As they adjust to life outside of the mother's womb, they begin to prepare for independence after they are weaned.

Giving colostrum is perhaps the best way to support their growth during this time.  Additionally, this 2021 study reported that "colostrum intake could significantly impact the long-term development of a newborn after weaning through the stimulation of organ development, particularly of the gastrointestinal tract." Colostrum is crucial during this time in early life because it provides optimal nutrition, which helps to create the foundation for health in the early stages as well as later on.  Optimal health is created by gut health, which is established during this period.

Conversely, it is possible for a dog to experience colostrum deficiency, which is a precursor to a weaker immune system and predisposition to disease.  For example, if the mother is a first-time mother, she is likely to be more stressed compared to mothers who have had prior offspring. The stress can negatively impact colostrum and milk production and negatively impact their offspring.  Additionally, if a puppy is weak or has any malformations in the mouth that prevents nursing, colostrum deficiency can occur.  Colostrum is crucial.

The are many benefits of supplementing with colostrum to dogs with a deficiency, as well as older dogs.  According to Dog's Naturally, colostrum's healing properties include, immunoglobins or antibodies such as IgG antibodies that neutralize viruses and fight bacteria, IgM antibodies that are the first line of defense against viruses, IgA antibodies that coat bacteria and viruses in the digestive tract so they don’t enter the body.  It can be used as supplement to alleviate conditions like allergies, leaky gut, diarrhea, oral health issues, autoimmune disease, cancer, yeast, joint issues, canine flu, skin problems gut damage from medications and drugs and promotes healthy aging..

Colostrum is incredibly beneficial if your dog has:

  • Allergies
  • Leaky gut
  • Diarrhea
  • Oral heath issues
  • Residual damage from drugs like antibiotics
  • Aging
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Yeast
  • Cancer
  • Joint Issues and Arthritis
  • Canine flu
  • Skin problems such as infections, wounds, insect bites, abscesses, hot spots, rashes, ear infections, cysts, folliculitis.

Most recently, my 2-year-old English Bulldog, Archer, had a lot of wax in his ears and yeast in the skin folds above his nose, which is very unlike him.  I added colostrum to his food, and his ears as well as the yeast in his folds resolved.

If you are interested in supplementing your dog's diet with colostrum, it's important to choose products that do not have any fillers, additives or dyes.  I particularly like Wholistic Pet Organics Immune because the only ingredient is organic bovine colostrum.  Since organic is always more expensive, Four Leaf Rover Bovine Colostrum isn't organic but also only contains New Zealand Bovine Colostrum.  Colostrum supplementation is unlikely to have side effects unless your dog has an allergy to cow's milk.
