They are deliberately poisoning our dogs
Kibble companies are deliberately poisoning our dogs. They don't care about you or your dog regardless of whatever special blend of kibble they produce to fix a problem they helped to create in the first place. They know exactly what they are creating and also know there is absolutely no way their products are going to do what they are sold to do.
Every single big kibble company is funding research to better understand the genome of the dog, which means they are striving to better understand the complete set of genetic information of the species. Additionally, this research will enable scientists to identify how specific factors including nutrition and diet impact how certain diseases are expressed.
Kibble companies are deliberately poisoning our dogs. They know exactly what they are doing. Mars Inc., Nestle Purina and Hill's produce most of the kibble brands on the market and they all employ very smart scientists, researchers and veterinarians to further their agenda, which is to make money at the expense of your dogs' health regardless of the claims they make.
For example, Mars Petcare has partnered with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard to create an open-access database of dog genomes to advance preventative care (Read more here). Nestle Purina collaborated with Cornell University to develop the Canine Reference Family DNA Distribution center, "a common platform for worldwide genetic data exchange. This canine reference family DNA helped researchers place hundreds of markers near specific genes and chromosomes, improving studies of how diseases – such as familial cancers – develop in both dogs and people" (Read more here).
According to Hill's Petcare, "different ingredients and nutrients have the ability to influence a gene's activity or expression, and can even change how genetic disease manifests. The study of the effect of nutrition on the genome is known as nutrigenomics. Current science can't provide your vet with a magic formula for good health, but it's an exciting new frontier in preventive medicine for our pets"(Read more here). I could not disagree with a statement more.
The magic formula for good health begins in the gut. Hippocrates figured this out 2000 years ago. The gut is a microbiome made of "highly diverse microbial flora, including commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms, inhabiting our intestine, and the intestinal microbiome refers to their collective genome and gene products" (Source: National Library of Medicine).
In order for your dog to have a healthy gut, they need to eat a nutrient-dense diet that includes meat, vegetables and some fruit. That's it. Another study states "Metagenomics and analysis of twins data has revealed that environmental factors such as diet and household cohabitation greatly outweigh heritable genetic contributions to the composition and function of gut microbiota" (Source: National Library of Medicine). In other words, diet, nutrition and exercise greatly impact how genes are expressed, more than genetic predisposition even if they are a bulldog.
Ingredients that create an unhealthy gut include grains, sugar, refined seed oils which are ALWAYS found in kibble. Consumption of foods high in grains and sugar spike glucose. which creates inflammation and eventually major metabolic issues like diabetes. Refined seed oils are vegetable oil, soybean oil, canola oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil are very high in omega-6. Consumption of too many omega-6 oils disrupts the proper ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 oil and have been proven to disrupt biological processes such as gene expression and lead to disease.
Despite their understanding of the genome of the dog, Mars Petcare, Nestle Purina and Hill's Pet all use these ingredients in their products. Kibble companies are deliberately poisoning our dogs. They know their ingredients are cheap, by-products of their other sugar empires and certainly do not promote health.
Royal Canin's Breed Health Nutrition Bulldog Adult Dog Dry Food, a kibble that is produced by Mars Inc, claims to meet the nutritional needs of bulldogs 1 year or older. The garbage ingredients include rice, oats, chicken by-product, wheat gluten, dried beet pulp (SUGAR), and vegetable oil. If you want your bulldog to be healthy, the LAST thing you want to do is feed a high carbohydrate and refined seed oil diet, like this one.
Nestle Purina's Purina One Digestive Health claims to support digestive health, but the ingredients they use include flour, whole grains, chicken by-product, oats, soybean meal and natural flavors. If your do has digestive issues the LAST thing you want to do is feed lots of grains and by-products because dogs are simply not designed to consume these ingredients.
Hill's Prescription Diet, h/D Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food claims to promote heart health. The garbage ingredient list includes whole grain wheat, whole grain corn, chicken by-product and soybean oil. If your dog has heart issues, the LAST thing you want to do is feed this. It will ultimately make your dog sicker than help any heart issue.
They know what they are doing. They have the fancy and expensive partnerships with genome institutes and organizations to prove it. They have strategically designed cheap products to make money literally at the expense of you and your dog so that your dog gets sick and you have to buy more of their products that will never do what they claim to do. Kibble companies are deliberately poisoning our dogs.
Librela should not be trusted. Neither should Zoetis. Any product that shuts down anything in the body will ultimately lead to more sickness later on. In nature, dogs products antibodies via B-lymphocytes are a natural immune response to "foreign molecules on invading disease cells/viruses, or on cancer cells. Natural antibodies are targeted to bind these foreign or cancerous molecules, as part of the body defending itself. However, if the immune system becomes dysregulated, the body a create antibodies that bind to self-proteins. This causes the body to attack itself, and results in autoimmune diseases. If antibodies bind to health proteins in the body, it often causes harm and upsets to the homeostasis of the organism."
Zoetis states the most common side effects of Librela that occurred in clinical studies, "were urinary tract infections, bacterial skin infections and dermatitis." Their disclaimer also states that "there are potential adverse events associated with all veterinary products, so it is important to work closely with your veterinarian, who knows your dog's health history to understand the potential risk and benefits.
Clinical trials that are funded by the same company that is manufacturing and selling the products are completely biased. For example, this 2021 study titled, "A prospective, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled multisite clinical study of bedinvetmab, a canine monoclonal antibody targeting nerve growth factor, in dogs with osteoarthritis," concluded that the drug is perfectly safe and effective when administered monthly for up to 9 months at 0.5 - 1.0 mg kg. All of the authors of this particularly study were Zoetis employees while engaging and completing the research. Zoetis should not be trusted.
This 2023 study also documented the efficacy and safety of Librela and that "adverse events were similar between (placebo and control) groups and not considered treatment-related." All of the authors of this study were also Zoetis employees while engaging and completing this research. Zoetis should not be trusted.
Big Pet Pharma's influence over clinical trials enables drug companies to focus on the benefits of the a given drug, in this case, Librela and downplay the risks and safety of the product to protect their bottom line, which is profit and not the health or well-being of your dog. The information documented in these clinical trials are biased and influence veterinarians to prescribe a drug without knowing all of the risks. To be clear, vets are not to blame here. Most are very hard-working and well-intentioned. Big Pet Pharma, like Zoetis, are the culprits.
The studies linked above are the only clinical trials completed and they are both funded by Zoetis. It is just not possible to receive unbiased information from clinical trials that are funded by the same company that is manufacturing the product to sell. Additionally, these studies were published in 2021 and 2023 and was approved by the FDA in May 2023. There is no possible way for the long-term side effects of Librela to be fully understood because the product hasn't been around long enough for side effects to be observed and documented, not that Zoetis would tell the truth anyway.
According to this recent article published in the Washington Post, pet owners claim that after taking Librela, "their dogs had trouble walking or suffered kidney failure." Others reported on social media that their dog's "mobility appeared to decline after using the drug, citing hind leg paralysis in some cases an inability to walk. Others said their dogs experienced anorexia, lost control of their bowels or experienced kidney issues after using the drug."
In addition to social media complaints, a Change.org petition was created to recall Librela from the market until further testing is completed. The petition states, "while some dogs may experience success with Librela, the thousands of dogs suffering from adverse reactions cannot be ignored, Zoetis should enhance the clarity of its product information regarding Librela, specifying suitable candidates for its uses."
