Do you trust a candy company with your dog's life?  I know I did, when my first bulldog puppy came home.  I fed him Royal Canin's Puppy formula, not once considering the ingredients that were used or how it was cooked.  Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Acana and Orijen are a few examples of kibble owned and manufactured by candy company Mars Inc.

Growing up, my dogs ate kibble.  That was normal to me and so I continued with my own puppy. Unfortunately, my puppy became chronically sick.  It was only then did I start researching order to figure out how to help him feel better because every prescription medication and diet didn't work. Unfortunately, it seemed to make him sicker.

Do you trust a candy company with your dog's life?

When you feed kibble, you are essentially trusting a candy company with your dog's life because nutrition is the biggest lever we can pull to help create health or disease.

Mars Inc. , and companies like it are in the business of keeping animals alive, not curing them or keeping them healthy. Vet schools are funded by these same companies that also own vaccine companies and makes laws on what is approved or not.  These kibble companies also work the board-certified vets who are funded by vaccine companies, who again are owned by kibble companies.

When I finally understood this, it became really difficult to trust my vet who kept medicating him and recommending Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition Bulldog Adult Dry Dog Food which is the equivalent of feeding your dog McDonald's everyday.  I'll break down the ingredient list next.  I asked her why this was happening to him and she attributed it all to being a bulldog.  Yes, bulldogs are notorious for issues, but that doesn't mean they are normal.

To be clear, I don't think vets are to be blamed here.  Big kibble companies are and I don't think she intentionally meant to hurt him, but I do believe that her veterinary education lacked any meaningful nutrition component, which was further biased by big kibble companies who fund the vet schools and again, have no interest in  and was partially funded by big kibble companies who have no interest in keeping your dog healthy.  If this particular vet and all vets truly understood nutrition, they would not recommend kibble, especially Royal Canin's bulldog blend.

Take a look at the ingredient list below:

Brewers Rice, Oat Groats, Chicken By-Product Meal, Brown Rice, Wheat Gluten, Chicken Fat, Pork Meal, Natural Flavors, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Fish Oil, Vegetable Oil, Sodium Silico Aluminate, Calcium Carbonate, Powdered Cellulose, Salt, Egg Product, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Vitamins [Dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate (Source Of Vitamin E), Niacin Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Source Of Vitamin C), D-Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement], Hydrolyzed Yeast, Potassium Citrate, L-Lysine, L-Tyrosine, Choline Chloride, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Marigold Extract (Tagetes Erecta L.), Trace Minerals [Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Copper Proteinate], Taurine, Magnesium Oxide, Green Tea Extract, Chondroitin Sulfate, Rosemary Extract, Preserved With Mixed Tocopherols And Citric Acid.

Aside from the fish oil, every other ingredient is garbage.  Here's why:

  • Brewer's Rice: This is the first ingredient, which means that it is used in the highest quantity in the blend.  It is a milled rice kernel and does have some nutrients, but is high in carbohydrates.  Dogs don't need a billion grams of carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Oat Groats: These are whole grain seeds that are genetically modified and doused in glyphosate.  Again, grains are carbs and dogs don't need a billion carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Chicken By-Product Meal: This is ground, rendered parts of slaughtered chicken that can't be used in human food.  This is the protein ingredient in this blend and it does not meet nutritional needs for optimal health.
  • Brown Rice: This is another carb that has been probably genetically modified unless it is organic, but that is unlikely.  Again, rice is a carb.  Dog's don't need a billion grams of carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Wheat Gluten: This is a protein found in grains.  It is used to bind ingredients together. Gluten can cause inflammation.
  • Chicken Fat: This is very high in linoleic acid, which is an omega 6 fatty acid.  Consumption of too many high Omega 6 fatty acids has been linked to inflammation and disease.
  • Pork Meal: This can be fresh, although very unlikely, or could be dried or dehydrated, kind of like mystery meat.  Mystery meat does not help your dog optimize health.
  • Natural Flavors: These are anything but natural.  These are ingredients that are flavored by chemicals, from plant or animal sources or substances manipulated in a lab.
  • Dried Plain Beet Pulp: This is the left over fiber that is extracted from sugar beets.  Sugar is a carbohydrate.  Dogs do not need sugar.  Period.
  • Vegetable Oil: These are refined seed oils, like canola, soybean, sesame, rapeseed, sunflower, sunflower, peanut or cottonseed oil that are also extremely high in omega 6 fatty acids.  Again, consumption of too many of them is linked to inflammation and disease.
  • Chemicals: Vitamins in synthetic or chemical form have been added to the food to make it more "nutritious."  If the food were nutritious in the first place, there would be no need to add in these chemicals that are difficult for dogs to digest and metabolize.

Ultimately, this food is a recipe for sickness and disease created by Mars Inc., a kibble company that owns every part of the vet biz including food, vets, medicine, vaccines, lab testing...really everything.

So, do you trust a candy company with your dog's life?
