Even More Proof that Kibble is Toxic

Even more proof that kibble is toxic exists.  In addition to "forever chemicals" found in the packaging of most big brand kibble companies (MARS, Nestle Purina and Hills), two other additives called butylated hydroxytoluene also referred to as BHT, and butylated hydroxyanisol also referred to as BHA are used in kibble to extend the shelf life of fat used to make the kibble by preventing it from prematurely spoiling.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as a possible carcinogen and n countries that actually care more about health and wellness, like Japan, Romania, Sweden and Australia have already banned the use of BHA and BHT because of its' potential dangerous side-effects.  BHA and BHT exposure have been linked to allergic skin reactions, disruption of proper hormone functioning, promotes tumor development.  Extended exposure to high doses of BHT is actually "toxic in mice and rats, causing living, thyroid and kidney problems and affect lung function and blood coagulation" and may act as estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, which prevents the expression of male sex hormones and creates possible reproductive challenges (DavidSuzuki).  This is even more proof that kibble is toxic.

Not surprisingly, companies like Nestle Purina could not literally care less about your dog.  According to Purina's website, they state that "BHA is an antioxidant used as a preservative in your pet's food" for taste and texture purposes and "BHT is a fat soluble compound and antioxidant uses as a preservative in your pet's food" also for taste and texture purposes (Purina). There is absolutely no acknowledgement that consumption of either could be harmful.

Nestle's UK website is a bit more honest yet defensive and states, " "BHA and BHT are also part of the list of additives authorised in animal nutrition by the European Union, under the maximum limits set for use in pet food. The authorisation of additives is a very rigorous process and is under the supervision of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). At Purina, we strictly comply with the maximum levels permitted by law to ensure our products are completely safe for all pets" (PurinaUK).

Eating ingredients used to increase the shelf-life of products that are linked to disease, is definitely not how I intend to help my dog live a happy and healthy life.
