Glyphosate is making your dog sick. Glyphosate is everywhere and in everything especially kibble. Glyphosate also referred to as "round-up" is the most commonly used herbicide in the United States and is designed to kill weeds and grasses while protecting crops. Glyphosate is used in the production of GMO, or genetically modified food, which ironically, are designed to be more resistant to pesticides or actually produce pesticides by themselves. The use of glyphosate has increased exponentially over the last 50 years because weeds have become resistant to it so even more applications are applied.
We believe that this increased glyphosate consumption is partially responsible for the disease epidemic we are seeing in both humans and dogs alike. According to the NIH, glyphosate exposure are linked to cancer, and damage to the nervous, endocrine and reproductive systems (Harvard). This 2015 study links the use of glyphosate to the depletion of Manganese, which is a nutrient that is required for optimal essential functions in the body. Manganese deficiency could very well be responsible, at least partly for common diseases including cancer and diabetes. Glyphosate is making your dog sick.
Another 2022 study states, that exposure to glyphosate "during the early stages of life can seriously affect normal cell development by deregulating some of the signaling pathways involved in this process, leading to alterations in differentiation, neuronal growth, and myelination. Glyphosate also seems to exert a significant toxic effect on neurotransmission and to induce oxidative stress, neuoroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, processes that lead to neuronal death due to autophagy, necrosis, or apoptosis, as well as the appearance of behavioral and motor disorders." Glyphosate is making your dog sick.
Genetically modified crops are cheaper compared to their organic/non-GMO counterparts. From a business perspective, using the cheapest ingredients will yield the most profit. And the most popular genetically modified crops are corn, soy, oats, wheat and legumes, are also the ingredients of many kibble formulas and blends. Other foods with high risk of glyphosate contamination include:
Almonds
Apples
Barley
Beans and other legumes
Beets
Canola
Collard
Kale
Millet
Oats
Peppers
Potatoes
Sorghum
Spinach
Strawberries
Sunflower
Tomatoes
Wheat
In addition to the crops listed above, the bigger issue is the food chain, which really is just the movement of energy and nutrients through an ecosystem. Humans and dogs are part of this ecosystem and whatever we consume was consumed or made by another organism. Taking it back to high school biology, think of the energy pyramid:
At the bottom of the pyramid are producers or plants that make energy by utilizing sugar, water and the sun, also known as photosynthesis. Primary consumers are herbivores and eat plants. Secondary consumers are omnivores, which are eat plants and animals as well as carnivores, that eat other animals. Tertiary consumers are decomposers who eat dead matter and waste products from other organisms within the food chain. Not pictured and at the very top of the food chain are humans and dogs. We eat from each of those trophic levels above in the food we eat today and whatever the other organisms ate, our dogs are eating that too. Glyphosate is making your dog sick.
For example, chicken is probably the most popular meat/protein source. If we consider the diet that those chickens ate before consumption in kibble products or by itself, we can have a better sense of how much glyphosate they were exposed to. The most popular ingredients in chicken feed are corn, soybean meal and wheat, which means they were probably harvested using glyphosate, unless organic. So if you see chicken listed as an ingredient in the kibble you feed your dog, it is very likely that they are consuming a chicken that has consumed glyphosate.
Let's take a look at a popular kibble brand, Purina. Purina ONE Smartblend Chicken & Rice Dry Dog Food ingredients are listed below.
Chicken (Source Of Glucosamine), Rice Flour, Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal (Source Of Glucosamine), Whole Grain Wheat, Soybean Meal, Beef Fat Naturally Preserved With Mixed-Tocopherols, Glycerin, Liver Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Mono And Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Caramel Color, Dried Carrots, Dried Peas, Potassium Chloride, Vitamins [Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin (Vitamin B-3), Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B-5), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B-2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9), Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Biotin (Vitamin B-7)], Minerals [Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite], Choline Chloride, L-Lysine Monohydrochloride, Sulfur. X-4154.
This entire ingredient list is concerning, but when it comes to glyphosate, anything highlighted in red has absolutely been sprayed with it or consumed it and now saturates the kibble your dog eats. This is a recipe for metabolic disease and sickness. Glyphosate is making your dog sick and is one of the biggest threats to our food supply and health. As the use of glyphosate increases, so will disease.
If you want your dog to thrive, do not feed kibble. Raw or home-cooked is the way to go. Feed organic whenever possible.
