Homeopathy Can Treat Vaccine Reactions

Vaccines can be an important part of protecting your dog’s health, but should be administered carefully and not on a “one size fits all” basis. However, if you do decide to vaccinate your dog, homeopathy can be used to lessen the risk of a vaccine reaction, which is called “vaccinosis.”

It’s also important to note that vaccinations can create protective immunity in preventing against infectious diseases, but more vaccines do not deliver more or better immunity. Before you vaccinate, requesting your veterinarian to perform a titer test to determine their serum antibody levels to determine if they actually need the vaccine in the first place.

Ideally, once you titer and determine a vaccine is needed, homeopathy can be used to treat vaccine reactions.

What are Common Vaccine Reactions?

Vaccine reactions are very common.  Particularly, skin issues, that are often diagnosed as some other disease.  The follow skin issues are common vaccinosis symptoms:

  • Alopecia
  • Calcium formations
  • Dermatitis
  • Interdigital cysts
  • Pyoderma
  • Ulcerations

Other vaccine reactions include:

  • Appetite issues
  • Diarrhea
  • Emaciation
  • Inflammation
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Lymphoma
  • Pancreatitis
  • Runny eyes and conjunctivitis (tear stains in dogs, dry eye, chronic eye allergies)
  • Spasms
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • GI lymphoma;

What is Homeopathy?

German physician, Samuel Hahnemann developed homeopathy in the late 1700's.  The guding principles of homeopathy include:

  • Like Cures Like: The use of a substance that triggers specific symptoms in a healthy person can be used in tiny, highly diluted doses to treat a sick person exhibiting those exact same symptoms
  • The Law of Infinitesimals: The belief that the more a substance is diluted, the greater its potency. Remedies are repeatedly shaken and diluted in alcohol or water, often leaving virtually no detectable trace of the original substance.

Thuja and Lyssin After Vaccines

Thuja occidentalis or Thuja and Lyssin are common homeopathic remedies frequently used in holistic veterinary medicine to help manage, minimize, or "detox" a dog's adverse reactions to vaccines.

Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen tree known in herbal and homeopathic traditions and is used to treat warts, tumors, and post-vaccination side effects

Lyssin is used to manage symptoms like intense sensitivity, agitation, and fearfulness, or as a remedy for post-vaccination reactions, particularly rabies.

You can read more about adverse reactions to the distemper vaccine here and the rabies vaccine here. Holistic veterinarians often recommend it to calm an overactive immune system, clear post-vaccine growths (like warts or skin tags), or address behavioral or digestive regressions that sometimes occur after a shot. Homeopathy can treat vaccine reactions.

According to this 2021 study, an animal that has experienced a vaccine reaction, “can be given the very safe oral homeopathics Thuja (for all vaccines other than rabies) and Lyssin to alleviate the symptoms of a vaccine-induced rabies miasm (molecular energy).”

In addition to vaccinosis, this 2023 study stated that Thuja “possesses a plethora of immunological properties that can be used effectively in the management of viral respiratory infections and has the potential to prevent further progression of the disease.”

When and How to Administer

  • Thuja 30c can be administered after Distemper and Parvovirus as soon as any vaccine reactions are observed.
  • Lyssin 30c can be administered on the day of the rabies vaccine to offset, lessen or reduce the risk of reaction.

Place 3-5 pellets of the remedy in 1/2 cup of filtered water. Be sure not to touch the pellets. Let the pellets dissolve. Use a syringe to draw up a dose of 2mL and place in your dog’s mouth. Observe your dog and see if you notice any changes. If you see an improvement, no further action is necessary. If you don’t see improvement, try another dose a few hours later. If no changes are observed a different remedy may be needed.

Homeopathy can treat vaccine reactions, should your dog develop any.  Homeopathic remedies will cost you about $8 - $10 per remedy and have no side effects.  If your dog is suffering, then you absolutely have nothing to lose.
