Rabies vaccine side effects are real.  So is rabies if your dog is bitten by another animal that is infected with the disease.  It is a neurotropic virus that causes rabies, a deadly disease that affects the central nervous system that is spread through the saliva of infected animals, typically through bites or scratches. In order to determine if the rabies vaccine is right for your dog, consider a risk benefit analysis:

The Risks of the Rabies Vaccine:

According to Patricia Jordan, DVM, there are countless ways for the rabies vaccination to hurt your dog and leave permanent damage.

After the vaccinations, problems can happen acutely, right away, or develop into chronic issues weeks, months or even years later.  Rabies vaccine side effects are real and acute problems include:

  1. Vomiting
  2. Facial Swelling
  3. Injection site swelling or lump
  4. Lethargy
  5. Hives
  6. Circulatory shock
  7. Injection site pain
  8. Itching
  9. Alopecia (Hair loss)
  10. Death
  11. Loss of consciousness
  12. Diarrhea
  13. Hypersensitivity
  14. Fever
  15. Anaphylaxis
  16. Ataxia (loss of balance / coordination)
  17. Lameness
  18. Hyperactivity
  19. Tremors
  20. Seizures
  21. Tumors
  22. Sudden behavior changes including aggression, fear or anxiety
  23. Immune mediated hemolytic anemia (MHA

If your dog has displayed any of these symptoms, they are displaying symptoms of rabies without having the actual disease.  This is because the vaccines contain an inactivated version of the rabies virus and the vaccines trigger symptoms in dogs, particularly more so in dogs that are predisposed, like pure breed dogs.

According to Dr. Jordan, DVM, these chronic conditions "can be triggered by the rabies vaccine's damaging effect on your dog's immune system and neurological system.  The rabies virus itself is a carcinogen.  The toxic ingredients in vaccines such as aluminum and mercury can also contribute to cancer and other chronic diseases. Rabies vaccine side effects are real and examples of these chronic conditions include:

  1. Fibrocarcinomas
  2. Cancers
  3. Digestive Issues like inflammatory bowel disease
  4. Seizures and epilepsy
  5. Food, environment and inhalant allergies
  6. Skin issues
  7. Muscle weakness
  8. Demyelination
  9. Autoimmune diseases (examples include but are not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, autoimmune thyroiditis
  10. Metabolic diseases (examples include but are not limited to diabetes, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, pancreatitis)

The Benefits of the Rabies Vaccines:

The rabies vaccine can prevent a rabies infection if your dog comes into contact with an animal that has the virus.

Continued Discussion:

I am not anti-vaccine.  I am anti-too many vaccines.  Most states require an initial rabies vaccine followed by a booster every 3 years.  These guidelines are antiquated and absolutely do not account for the fact that the rabies vaccine is designed to last in the body for 7 years as described in studies written by Ronald Schultz PhD (Read more on those here).  Rabies vaccine side effects are real.  Even more disturbing, Dr. Jordan states that "the one year rabies vaccine is identical to the three year rabies vaccine, just labeled differently" and "every (rabies) vaccination increases the risk of an adverse vaccine reaction happening to your dog" (Source: Dogs Naturally).

Vaccines are also prescribed on one-dose-fits all basis and does not consider individual metrics like body-weight.  All dogs regardless of size, ranging from a 3 lb Yorkie to a 110 lb Saint Bernard get the same amount of vaccine.Vaccine manufacturers are not required to prove that their vaccine is safe in every single breed that that the rabies vaccine is intended for. They aren't required to test to see if that same vaccine is equally safe or not for that 3 lb Yorkie and that110 lb Saint Bernard

If you continue to vaccinate each year or every 6 months, or according to how frequently most vets will recommend, the liver, the main detoxification organ in the body literally becomes bombarded and can no longer function optimally, which creates sickness like allergies, autoimmune disease, cancer etc.  The dose determines the poison and ultimately, the more toxins in the body, the more sickness.

Despite the vaccine requirements varying from state-to-state, it is most likely that your dog will receive too many rabies vaccines, unless you advocate differently.

In fact, according to this recent article titled, "More than half of dog owners are suspicious of rabies and other vaccines, new study finds, of 2,200 people polled on their opinions on the safety of the rabies vaccine, "37% believe canine vaccination is unsafe, 22% feel it's ineffective and 30% find it unnecessary.  Overall, a whopping 53% hold at least one of those beliefs."  The study also found that 40% of respondents expressed concerns that vaccines could also cause autism in their dogs.  I think a lot of this can be attributed to confusion and chaos around the covid vaccine and people beginning to question mandates that don't make a lot of sense.

How do you make sure your dog doesn't get too many rabies vaccines?

First, you can get educated like you are doing right now.  Always ask questions and make sure you understand why your vet is recommending something.

Second, since most states require proof of rabies vaccination, you can work with your vet to obtain a rabies vaccination exemption letter.  If your vet determine that the vaccine will cause an adverse reaction, then they should provide you with an exemption letter.  According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, "Some states are also beginning to provide exemptions for vaccination requirements if medically necessary as determined by a veterinarian," which is a big win.

Third, always, always, always request a titer test before giving any vaccine.  A titer test is a simple blood test that will measure antibody levels present in your dog and will determine if they are still protected from the disease.  I would bet that if they received one vaccine, they are probably set for a very long time, if not their entire lives.

If your dog has already received a bunch of boosters, and they have been diagnosed with a condition it isn't too late.  There are things you can do to detox the vaccine from the body.  You can start by chatting with us here to figure out how to heal your dog naturally. We also always recommend feeding a raw diet that is comprised of high protein to rebuild and rebalance their gut microbiome and optimize health.  Working with an integrative vet is also incredibly helpful in healing your pet from the inside out.  Click here to find an integrative vet near you.
