Kibble is a slow poison.  Sickness and disease probably won't happen quickly, but it definitely will slowly regardless if it is dry, canned, name-brand or prescription.  It's all the same garbage ingredients that are simply not made to optimize the health of your dog.

When I first got my English Bulldog, Sheldon, I thought I was doing right by him by feeding him the best kibble I could, which at the time was Royal Canin's Bulldog blend.  I mean, it was specifically formulated for bulldogs, right?  Like what could be better?  Spoiler Alert: Literally everything.

About 2,500 years ago, Hippocrates said, "All disease begins in the gut." He was 1000000% correct because we literally become what we eat and its the same for dogs, even if it is recommended by your breeder and vet, like it was recommended by mine.  If your dog eats kibble, they will get sick eventually because kibble is a slow poison.

After Sheldon became chronically ill at around 3 years of age.  I asked my vet why this was happening to him and she attributed it all to being a bulldog.  To be clear, my vet was well-intentioned and truly wanted him to feel better, but just wasn't aware of how sensitive bulldogs are and later admitted that to me.  Yes, bulldogs are notorious for issues, but that doesn't mean they are normal.  I started researching how to help him get better because the thousands of dollars at the vet spent on steroids, antibiotics, anti-fungals and prescription kibble weren't working.  In fact, he was definitely getting sicker.

I was truly desperate to help him feel better so I turned to IG and as fate would have it, I met Sahara Lotti, Lash Queen and animal lover.  She suggested he was sick because of the combination of too many vaccines too soon and the kibble I was feeding him.  I thought that there was no way she was right.  Like, how could she be?  She wasn't a vet or a breeder.  But, I was desperate and willing to try anything so I took a leap of faith and followed her advice and took him to a holistic veterinarian, the only one in NYC and took him off the steroids he was on and began to prepare home cooked meals of white fish and vegetables to help reset his body.  You can find this recipe that Sahara created here.

As a result, Sheldon got better.  I was amazed, grateful and understood the significance of how important the things we put in our bodies are, like food and vaccines.  They can either help to optimize health or destroy it over time.

When I finally understood this, I truly understood that Royal Canin's Breed Health Nutrition Bulldog Adult Dry Food was and is a slow poison.  i

Aside from the fish oil, every other ingredient is garbage.  Here's why:

  • Brewer's Rice: This is the first ingredient, which means that it is used in the highest quantity in the blend.  It is a milled rice kernel and does have some nutrients, but is high in carbohydrates.  Dogs don't need a billion grams of carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Oat Groats: These are whole grain seeds that are genetically modified and doused in glyphosate.  Again, grains are carbs and dogs don't need a billion carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Chicken By-Product Meal: This is ground, rendered parts of slaughtered chicken that can't be used in human food.  This is the protein ingredient in this blend and it does not meet nutritional needs for optimal health.
  • Brown Rice: This is another carb that has been probably genetically modified unless it is organic, but that is unlikely.  Again, rice is a carb.  Dog's don't need a billion grams of carbs to thrive.  They need protein.
  • Wheat Gluten: This is a protein found in grains.  It is used to bind ingredients together. Gluten can cause inflammation.
  • Chicken Fat: This is very high in linoleic acid, which is an omega 6 fatty acid.  Consumption of too many high Omega 6 fatty acids has been linked to inflammation and disease.
  • Pork Meal: This can be fresh, although very unlikely, or could be dried or dehydrated, kind of like mystery meat.  Mystery meat does not help your dog optimize health.
  • Natural Flavors: These are anything but natural.  These are ingredients that are flavored by chemicals, from plant or animal sources or substances manipulated in a lab.
  • Dried Plain Beet Pulp: This is the left over fiber that is extracted from sugar beets.  Sugar is a carbohydrate.  Dogs do not need sugar.  Period.
  • Vegetable Oil: These are refined seed oils, like canola, soybean, sesame, rapeseed, sunflower, sunflower, peanut or cottonseed oil that are also extremely high in omega 6 fatty acids.  Again, consumption of too many of them is linked to inflammation and disease.
  • Chemicals: Vitamins in synthetic or chemical form have been added to the food to make it more "nutritious."  If the food were nutritious in the first place, there would be no need to add in these chemicals that are difficult for dogs to digest and metabolize.

Ultimately, the ingredients in this food that make up up kibble, are a slow poison.  The links below are articles that also document the potential dangers of feeding your dog kibble:

This 2014 study reported that "the inclusion of whole food ingredients in natural pet foods as opposed to fractionated ingredients may result in higher nutrient concentrations, including phytonutrients.  Additionally, the processing of commercial pet food can impact digestibility, nutrient bioavailability, and safety..."

Feeding a species-appropriate diet is bioavailable and healthy.  Raw food or cooking at home is the way to go if you want your dog to thrive.  Click here for more info on raw food, here for more info on home-cooking and here for more info on bioavailable supplements to support your pup's optimal health.
