Our dogs are not cash cows, even though that is how they are treated in vet business. Sickness is a huge money maker and that's what a business is all about: making money. But, there is a much better way. Prevent the sickness in the first place and never need a vet. Period. Vets are not at fault here. Most are well-intentioned and work really hard. Big pharma and big kibble are the culprits here. They dominate the entire pet care industry.
You can go about doing this by vaccinating carefully and doing titer antibody blood tests on pure-breed dogs and all dogs age 4+. You can also feed a species appropriate diet that includes meat, veggies and fruit and not kibble. You can provide access to fresh water, sunlight and exercise. This is the formula to keep your dog healthy. It's simple. It's logical and what nature intended. Nature did not intend for dogs to consume highly processed kibble and take Apoquel or steroids. Our dogs are not cash cows.
I never really understood how nature worked honestly until I saw my first-born, English Bulldog, Sheldon, suffer for the first few years of his life. I fed him kibble, because that's what this particular "champion" breeder recommended. I vaccinated often and even when he was sick because that's what my former vet said to. I thought I was doing every single thing right, but I had a very sick dog and conventional treatment failed him and cost me thousands of dollars. He was diagnosed with with vasculitis and a host of other chronic conditions, and every single expensive antibiotic and steroid only made him sicker. He was a cash cow because I didn't know any better. Don't let your dog be a cash cow.
After being told that he would need to be on steroids for the rest of his life (he was only 4), I had enough. I turned to IG, found, Bobzilla and Sahara Lotti and my life changed. She recommended I work with an integrative vet and try homeopathy. I was extremely skeptical but extremely desperate and never thought it work, but had to try. I am so grateful I did because it saved his life. She prescribed two homeopathic remedies and his vasculitis and other issues healed entirely within a month and they never came back until the very end of his life, which is a long and sad story for another day.
I also started cooking for him. I cooked white fish and rotated veggies for him for about a year before I switched him to a raw diet. The white fish diet helped his body detox along with the homeopathic remedies and he also lost about 10lbs. You can find that recipe on our website here. The kibble made him super chunky. As his body continued to detox, he continued to get healthier and stronger. He had puppy-like energy again. He also never got sick and now only went to the vet once a year for his annual exam. He was no longer a cash cow.
Our dogs are not cash cows. If they do get sick, using the most gentle treatments and therapies first are the way to go. Homeopathy and acupuncture are great examples. They are rooted in the belief that the body has the power to heal itself and rebalances and aligns the mind, body and spirit to restore to optimal health. Treatment is individualized and based on the symptoms that are presenting. The goal is to uncover the root cause and then help the body, mind and spirit heal itself. Whereas in modern medicine, the goal is simply to treat the symptoms.
I've also come to believe that if something has been around for centuries, like homeopathy and acupuncture, it still works today. There is often a lot of controversy and some stigma around any kind of treatment that isn't mainstream. I think a lot of this is because our culture embraces quick fixes and popping pills because it is easier than finding and treating the root cause and making major lifestyle shifts. It's much easier to pop a pill for a symptom as opposed to going to say acupuncture weekly or making serious changes to diet. You also need to have the resources, desire and knowledge to obtain and use these alternative approaches.
I think the other big issue is big pharmaceutical companies are truly corrupt and could care less about your health or the health of your dog. According to this article, "Institutional Corruption of Pharmaceuticals and the Myth of Safe and Effective Drugs" published in the National Library of Medicine, states, "The pharmaceutical industry has corrupted the practice of medicine through its influence over what drugs are developed, how they are tested, and how medical knowledge is created." These same pharmaceutical companies that are making drugs are also the same companies that are funding research and sponsoring the FDA, the organization that deems drugs safe or not. How can this be unbiased or ethical? It's not.
There is also a lack of scientific and unbiased research available when it comes to homeopathy for example. It takes an incredible amount of money to fund research and clinical trials, which is a drop in the bucket for pharma companies but virtually impossible for say, your local acupuncturist to fund.
The same thing is happening in the veterinary industry. No question. The medical industry and veterinary industry are just that: industries. The goal of industries and big companies are to sell products like medicine, vaccines and kibble that make money, not necessarily keep your animal well and thriving. Big companies can't profit off of nature, so they don't. They sell you products that are designed to keep your dog alive but not thriving because a healthy dog is not a paying customer. Sick dogs are cash cows.
If you don't want your dog to be a cash cow, feed them raw food. Vaccinate them carefully. You can read more about what to feed, which includes raw food brands, home-cooked food, supplement recommendations as well as how and when to vaccinate.
