Prescription kibble is not the answer to your dog's ailments. Prescription kibble is basically regular kibble, but more money and it certainly won't heal whatever the underlying issue is that is causing whatever symptoms your dog maybe experiencing. If your dog has a chronic condition, there is a reason that he/she is experiencing the symptoms of that chronic condition and feeding prescription is not the answer because it won't heal it. Healing is where it is at, which can only happen with proper nutrition. Learn more about optimal nutrition for your dog here.
Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, autoimmune diseases and allergies will not and never be healed with prescription kibble. Prescription kibble has the same garbage ingredients that regular kibble has and it will create more inflammation and disease in their bodies over time, which will make them sicker. Prescription kibble is not the answer.
Let's take a look at Hill's Prescription Diet w/d Multi-Benefit Dry Dog Food for diabetic dogs that claims to support glucose management, digestive care, weight management, blood sugar management and urinary health. When a dog has diabetes, glucose control is crucial and this brand and formula claims to do that. Check out the ingredient list below:
There is actually not a single ingredient in here that will help your dog's diabetes. The whole grain wheat, cellulose, whole grain corn, corn gluten mean, cracked pearly barley, whole grain oats and dried beet pulp are starchy carbohydrates that will spike your dog's glucose, diabetes or not. Not only is this ingredient list particularly bad for any dog, but especially horrific for a dog with diabetes because of the excessive, ultra-processed and unnecessary starchy carbs that will spike glucose and insulin, which are already elevated because the dog has diabetes.
Further, because the ingredients listed above are not organic, they have been sprayed in pesticides, like glyphosate, which is linked to even more chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and chronic disease. So if you want your dog with diabetes to live as comfortably and long as possible, I would recommend NEVER feeding this particular brand and blend, EVER. Prescription kibble is not the answer. Granted this is only one example, but it accurately shows the kinds of ingredients used in most kibble blends because kibble companies could literally not care less about your or your dog.
If you do feed your dog prescription kibble or regular kibble, look at the ingredients carefully. If you see any of the following ingredients, find or make something that doesn't have them instead:
- Very high carb content (ex. corn, wheat, barley, grain, dried beet pulp)
- Refined Seed oils (ex. canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil)
- By-product meal (ex. chicken meal, pork meal)
- Natural Flavors and food coloring
- Ingredients that are difficult to pronounce
If you want your dog to thrive, don't feed kibble. If you want your dog to heal, don't feed kibble because prescription kibble is not the answer. Feed a high-quality nutrient-dense diet.
