Raw food fearmongering is real. Fearmongering is a form of manipulation that causes fear by using exaggerated rumors of impending danger. The FDA and Center for Veterinary Medicine, Big Kibble companies and Big Pet Pharma companies are fearmongering experts particularly when it comes to anything that could threaten sales, like feeding raw meat based food instead of feeding kibble.
The FDA Center of Veterinary Medicine specifically warns consumers specifically about the dangers of feeding your dog raw food by stating "raw pet foods can make pets and people sick" and advises pet owners "don't feed pets raw pet food or uncooked meat."
Raw food fearmongering is real. In fact, a recent study published in Frontiers investigates the effect of feeding kibble or a raw meat-based diet by examining fecal microbiota composition, serum metabolomics and inflammatory markers. Fecal microbiota composition refers to the abundance and variety of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract, which include bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protists that interact with each other to regulate immune responses. Serum metabolomics is a technique used to assess the pathophysiological read-out in the whole-body metabolism. Inflammatory markers measure inflammation in the blood by measuring C-Reaction Protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and plasma viscosity (PV).
The study concluded that "feeding minimally processed diets higher in protein with few plant-source carbohydrates changed microbial populations as well as serum metabolites." Further, this was they first study to report that raw meant based diets were "associated with increased fecal IAP, IgA, and IgG," which are major components of the intestines and play a vital role in intestinal homeostasis. Intestinal homeostasis implies optimal gut health, which leads to a healthy dog. Raw food fearmongering is real.
Dogs have 42 teeth intended to cut meat and bone, just like wolves. They are genetically designed to survive and eat prey, not donuts, pizza, or anything else highly processed like kibble. When I switched my English Bulldog from Eukanuba to Royal Canin to Diamond Naturals, I saw zero improvement in his skin, weight or vasculitis, which is an autoimmune condition. When I finally switched him to raw and overcame the fearmongering, his skin conditions were gone, his fur was so soft, he lost 10 lbs and his autoimmune condition disappeared. Raw food fearmongering is real.
Lastly, it's important to note that the FDA and Center for Veterinary Medicine are literally funded by the companies that they regulate. Companies are in the business of making profit, not optimizing the health of your dog. Feeding raw food or home-cooking threatens their profit and they will do anything to make a buck. Raw food fearmongering is real.
If you want your dog to live a long, happy, healthy life, feed raw or homecooked. Ignore the fearmongering.
